What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Air and Space Defense Department is at the forefront of innovation in mechanical and aeronautical engineering for our Nation’s missile, air, and space defense capabilities. We strive to collaborate across Sandia to integrate capabilities and talent, providing components to countermeasures, for launching on rocket and missile systems.

We are seeking a Summer Intern to work closely with our engineering team on a variety of projects from mechanical design and assembly to wind tunnel testing, to failure analysis. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic work environment and contribute to real-world engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design and development of mechanical components using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
  • Participate in the assembly and testing of prototypes, ensuring adherence to quality standards.
  • Conduct failure analysis on components and systems, documenting findings and proposing solutions.
  • Collaborate with engineers to troubleshoot design issues and optimize performance.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports and presentations for project updates.
  • Engage in team meetings and contribute ideas for ongoing projects and improvements.

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Currently pursuing a masters’ degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • A passion for engineering and a desire to learn.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
