What Your Job Will Be Like:

Do you want to join a dynamic team that modernizes our Nation’s most critical weapon systems to ensure a safe and credible strategic deterrence for America? If so, department 2218 is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with strong interpersonal, teaming, and analytical skills to support production efforts for the W88 ALT370 AF&F (Arming, Fuzing & Firing) and System.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Resolve production challenges in a collaborative manner across multiple internal and external agencies.
  • Work with engineers, technologists, and technicians from multiple Sandia National Labs (SNL), Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Pantex (PX), and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) organizations to solve technical challenges.
  • Update design definition and documentation.
  • Serve as systems point of contact to component product realization teams.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel may be required for this position.

Salary Range:

$95,400 - $185,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Mechanical Engineering or Systems Engineering with a Mechanical background; OR equivalent experience and/or achievements in engineering or science that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in above stated field.
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent (DoD Top Secret clearance).
  • A desire and ability to work on and communicate ambitious issues with dynamic conditions, competing importance, and firm target dates in a constantly evolving environment with urgency.
  • A demonstrated ability to integrate, build, and work effectively across technical teams, collaborate with customers and partners to resolve issues, and conduct trade-offs to identify system solutions.
  • Experience in a nuclear weapon system or component organization.
  • Previous work with the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC) and/or Pantex.

About Our Team:

Department 2218 W88 ALTs 370 Product Realization, provide systems engineering and program integration for the US Navy Strategic Nuclear Weapons. The department is directly responsible for the design, development, and qualification the W88 ALT 370 System consisting of the Mk5 reentry body and the integrated Arming, Fuzing, and Firing (AF&F) system for the reentry body. Our departments focus has transitioned into supporting rate production with our production agency partners to deliver Mk5 reentry bodies and AF&Fs to meet the nation’s deterrent needs. We also provide input to the Weapons Stockpile Management organizations as it relates to Annual Assessment and formal anomalies.

Security Clearance:

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
