Job Description

What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Advanced Special Communications Systems Department is seeking a summer engineer intern whose study, interest, and experience include RF circuit design, software development, troubleshooting, testing, digital communications signaling, and waveform development. On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Support development of advanced RF systems across a diverse frequency range (VHF-EHF) for real-world technology applications
  • Contribute to design of RF communication signaling protocols and waveforms
  • Contribute to laboratory testing of RF systems
  • Contribute to field testing of RF systems
  • Utilize advanced commercial technology, tools, design and testing practices to improve development processes and designs of advanced RF systems

Salary Range:

Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Interest and experience doing engineering work: circuit design, software development, digital signal processing analysis, or mechanical design.
  • Experience with embedded software development or FPGA design is desired
  • Experience in designing miniaturized RF electronics, RF frequency filters, and understanding of low signal-to-noise environments
  • Experience in use of RF related test and measurement equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and RF power meters as well as standard electronics test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes and DVMs.

The Advanced Special Communications Systems department specializes in technologies enabling the relay of signals from, or into difficult environments. This includes miniature transponders, specialized radars, and advanced signal processing for sponsors in the emerging threats, military, intelligence, and materials control areas. Design expertise include: microwave circuits and RF systems, digital FPGA's, embedded software, microcontrollers, and high performance computing platforms for signal processing.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
