Job DescriptionThis position requires a versatile individual with a broad range of mechanical, electrical, and other skills to handle diverse tasks across the College of Arts & Science, particularly in Psychological Sciences. You will be responsible for fabricating, maintaining, and repairing equipment and spaces, utilizing expertise in machining, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and general trades to ensure the functionality of office, classroom, and laboratory environments. For more specialized and complex projects, you'll collaborate closely with the university's facilities team to ensure that repairs, adjustments, and upgrades meet institutional standards.
This position is well-suited for a tradesperson who enjoys varied work, thrives in a collaborative environment, and has the expertise to handle both independent tasks and higher-skilled projects in conjunction with the facilities team. The successful candidate will regularly engage with staff, faculty, graduate students, and other co-workers, to support their diverse needs and ensure the smooth operation of university spaces.
This position will begin in January 2025.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in developing and implementing plans for fabricating and assembling parts, instruments, and equipment for educational and research purposes.
Assist in assembling, testing, and adjusting equipment.
Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on motors, generators, electrical and mechanical instruments, and furniture.
Utilize independent judgement to determine if repairs, adjustments, or replacement is necessary.
Assist with minor remodeling and upkeep of existing office, laboratory, and other department spaces.
Operate a wide range of hand and machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, and drill presses, as well as diagnose and resolve issues in equipment or infrastructure.
Manage the inventory of tools and materials, to ensure availability for various projects while monitoring supplies for timely reordering.
Shift
The work is generally performed Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. However, specific hours and days can be flexible. For instance, the department is willing to consider five 8-hour days or four 10-hour days.
Minimum Qualifications
An Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of education and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Employees working within this classification are required to wear appropriate safety equipment and apparel.
