Job Description

Summary

The selected individual will perform functional experiments with patient-derived models (in vitro and in vivo) of brain tumors and supervise the activities of trainees and other staff in the lab. This position will have a key role in advancing the research priorities of the Gallo lab by coordinating experimental activities among lab members and complementing expertise in select areas, particularly as in relation to preclinical work in mice. This position will therefore require strong experimental and management skills and expertise.

Job Duties

  • Planning, directing and conducting experiments.
  • Perform these activities for their own projects.
  • Help trainees and other staff in the lab with planning and performing experiments.
  • Perform experiments as well as mentoring and supervising other lab members as needed.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to carry out experiments in the context of larger projects where multiple trainees and/or staff are stakeholders.
  • Understand the overall research trajectory of a project so as to plan experiments and achieve the desired goals.
  • Ensure all experimental goals and activities will be determined and prioritized with the PI.
  • Ability to independently evaluate, process and analyze data from experiments.
  • Data must be analyzed with the proper statistical techniques and must be displayed and presented according to the highest standards.
  • Present their data in a suitable format to the PI directly and at lab meetings.
  • Proficient with the current and past literature; must be able to perform literature searches and reviews independently to improve their knowledge of the field and to identify appropriate experimental procedures to perform.
  • Summarize literature reviews appropriately (for instance, using PowerPoint presentations).
  • Ability to adapt to new experimental procedures will be performed.
  • Will require the optimization of workflows and reagents.
  • Will work with the PI and other team members to optimize such protocols.

  • Will have opportunities to help with writing papers, grants and animal and ethics protocols. These activities will require impeccable record keeping, the generation of professionally made figures, and the ability to write clearly.
  • supervise and mentor more junior trainees and staff, as agreed upon with the PI; will have supervisory roles for specific projects and individuals in case a trainee or staff member requires help with specific activities.
  • Generate patient-derived models from surgical specimens. These models mainly consist of primary cultures and xenografts.
  • Keep precise records of model generation, and maintain the lab database of patient-derived models.
  • Help with ordering reagents and supplies using institutional platforms.
  • Manage chemical inventories and help ensure that all regulatory requirements are met.
  • Ensure that all lab members are up to date with their training and certifications.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field.
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.
