Job Description
Summary
This Research Technician will work in a Core laboratory that provides assistance as part of Metabolism and Phenotyping Core under the Advance Technology Cores at Baylor College of Medicine. The primary responsibility of the Technician is to perform analysis of mouse metabolic phenotypes under the direct supervision of Core director. A successful candidate should be highly-motivated, well organized, technically capable, and ready to learn new techniques. The technician will also perform duties that includes maintenance of experimental animals, and clean satellite room, complete daily health check up log sheet.Excellent communication and multitasking abilities are required.
This position may require infrequent weekend and after hours work.
Job Duties
- Conducts research experiments including: mouse metabolism analyses, weekly cage changes and room management, daily rodent health checks and molecular analysis of plasma samples.
- Maintains lab stocks as well as help with lab maintenance.
- Collects, compiles, and analyzes data.
- Documents results of experiments.
- Perform routine laboratory tests under close supervision
- Ensure that duties are completed accurately and delivered with high quality in a timely manner
- Perform basic analytical tests based on standards and procedures as assigned by the supervisor
- Keeps a detailed laboratory workbook and keeps record of daily work
- Collects, analyzes, and documents experimental results
- Interacts with Core users providing expertise and service.
- Applies routine research techniques.
- Core space management, organizing freezer space , and maintaining lab equipment.
- Mouse handling and mouse work.
- Follow IACUC guidelines.
- Basic analytical assays including ELISA, RIA, calorimetric assays.
- Tail vein injection.
- Mouse blood collection and plasma separation.
- Mouse tissue collection.
- Assist Core director during mouse surgery and post surgery monitoring.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- One year of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related field.
- A strong interest in work with mouse colonies, mouse handling, and biochemistry.
- Highly motivated to work in laboratory setup.
- Basic knowledge in Microsoft Excel and data input.
- Well organized and technically capable of learning new techniques.
- 3-5 years of relevant experience is needed to reach higher position levels and achieve additional growth opportunities.
