College/Department Information
The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 304 students per class. The MCG educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, with regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state, and two four-year campuses located in Athens (in partnership with the University of Georgia) and in Savannah (in partnership with Georgia Southern University). MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provide more than 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to approximately 575 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.
Job Summary
This position supports the AU Center for Blood Disorders, an outpatient hematology clinic providing care for adults with bleeding disorders, clotting disorders, and sickle cell disease. The Nurse Clinician will provide direct patient care (including phlebotomy), coordinate clinical operations, manage prescription refills, answer patient messages, maintain clinic inventory, and complete patient-related documents, such as forms, letters, and Prior Authorizations. Other duties include serving as patient advocate/liaison, collaborating with the multi-disciplinary medical team, and providing education/counseling including in-services and educational sessions in collaboration with other health agencies in the region. This position may also provide support for research operations, including assisting with recruitment and protocol-required tasks, such as lab collection.
Note: Clinical functions supported by this position take place on campus, via telemedicine, and in clinics located across Georgia. Occasional travel may be required.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Perform and document nursing assessments, including vital signs, point-of-care testing, medication reconciliation, and evaluation of physical and psychosocial needs.
Develop and implement nursing treatment plans
Enter orders as directed for diagnostic tests, labs, and referrals.
Perform in-clinic phlebotomy (including capillary and peripheral venous sticks as well as central venous port access) and hand-deliver lab samples to receiving lab for processing.
Review results of labs and diagnostic testing, ensuring providers are aware of any abnormal values, and coordinating treatment as indicated.
Triage and track incoming referrals, making decisions on appropriateness and urgency for scheduling at CFBD.
Manage patient and patient-related calls and messages, triaging needs, answering questions, and providing education, seeking guidance from providers as indicated.
Coordinate and facilitate appointments and patient contact with all disciplines and services.
Assist with ongoing assessments of medications, including calling in or electronically entering new prescriptions and renewals, obtaining prior authorization, monitoring prescription frequency, and communicating with providers, patients, and pharmacies regarding any prescription issues.
Assist with follow up on laboratory and other test results, communicate with providers, and facilitate any needed intervention.
Help complete paperwork or write letters in support of patients' insurance needs, work or school requirements, disability assessments, financial issues, or other.
Monitor patient status toward goals and evidence-based management.
May require occasional travel to outreach clinics.
Provide information / education to patients and family members to promote seamless, continuous, and comprehensive care for patients transitioning from pediatric to adult care, for all new adult patients, and for existing patients as needed. Initiate and document teaching and develop patient/ family education programs or tools based on assessment of needs. Complete Transition Readiness Assessments in Young Adults shifting from pediatric to adult care and address any knowledge gaps identified. Educate patients and families about research opportunities.
Serve as a resource for community educational events, such as health fairs, fund raisers, screenings, symposiums, lectures, and staff education.
Maintain inventory of clinical supplies and place orders for supervisor to process.
Maintain clinical databases - data entry, auditing, and reporting. Ensure clinical databases are current, complete, and accurate.
Help schedule local and outreach clinics; help promote patient compliance with treatments and clinic visits; follow up on no-shows to clinic and referral visits; help monitor and improve census trends.
Assist with re-engaging patients who are lost to follow up.
Coordinate multi-disciplinary comprehensive clinics.
May require occasional travel to outreach clinics
Perform duties as assigned to facilitate clinic and research operations and to promote optimal patient care and patient satisfaction.
Assist with Quality Assurance/ Quality Improvement efforts.
Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university, active licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Georgia, and a minimum of three years of clinical experience. Must possess a current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS/BCLS certification
OR
Associate's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university, licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Georgia, and a minimum of six years of clinical experience. Must possess a current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS/BCLS certification.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Must be self-motivated.
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
Detail-oriented with strong prioritization, organizational, typing and multi-tasking skills.
Knowledge of good clinical practices and IRB requirements; basic clinical skills; patient evaluation procedures; medical terminology
Ability to maintain confidentiality; interpret lab tests/x-rays; exercise sound judgment and make responsible decisions; work independently; and work flexible hours.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days/M-F (work outside of normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)
Pay Band: B13
Salary: $68,500/annually - $87,000/annually
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
