Job Description
Job Summary:This position exists to promote the goals of the Professional Risk Management Program for the insured entities of the University of Colorado Self-Insurance and Risk Management Trust (Trust). The position requires extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience, including direct responsibility for the assessment and development of strategies to mitigate legal exposure to the insured entities. The individual must be able to work effectively, collaboratively and in a professional manner with University leadership, faculty and all levels of health care providers, staff, patients and legal counsel.
Key Responsibilities:
Develops and presents educational programs to raise staff awareness of risk management concepts related to specific clinical area.
Liaison between patients, lawyers, and University Counsel and independently negotiates settlements and resolutions, which may have significant legal and/or monetary implications for the parties involved.
Coordinates peer and quality reviews on cases determined to have quality and management concerns and/or threat of litigation.
Responsible for analyzing clinical care, collaborating with medical staff and other members of the health care team to complete the necessary investigation of events and legal cases. Recommends steps for action to mitigate legal exposure to the University and insured entities.
Investigation of Notices of Claim, lawsuits and licensing board complaints or other threats of legal or regulatory action. Prepares appropriate responses.
Collaborate with Patient Safety Organization and clinic leadership to share learnings, benchmark performance and support University wide quality and patient safety initiatives.
Work Location:
Remote – this role is eligible to work remotely, but the employee must be in the United States. This position will be required to attend in person meetings as needed.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution
Five years of management or leadership in a healthcare setting
Registered Nurse, Licensed in Colorado or eligible for license
Substitution: An advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate) may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis if the degree is in a field of study directly related to the work assignment.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in Patient Safety Organization regulations, event reporting systems, and quality improvement methodologies.
seven years’ experience in management or leadership in a health care related field.
Three years Healthcare risk management and/or claims experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
Knowledge of Patient Safety Organization event reporting systems and quality improvement methodologies.
Outstanding customer service skills.
Demonstrated ability to synthesize and present high level information in a concise and comprehensive manner to all levels of understanding. This includes presenting risk management and professional malpractice information to medical, nursing, and other professional staff.
Ability to read, interpret and draw accurate conclusions from both legal and factual information.
Superior skills in establishing work priorities, providing follow through and meeting established guidelines.
Ability to think critically in dynamic situations .
Flexible and adaptable to frequently shifting priorities.
